Smooth Jamz #3

Pages...damn, this shit is amazing. I can't believe how slept on these guys are, but I am happy to present them to all of you, as the smooth factor is really cranked up to full throttle with this group. Amazing chops, production, and the song writing is actually pretty damn good. Fans of Boz Scaggs, Hall & Oates, Michael McDonald, George Benson and the like will find a lot enjoyment with this. Apparently they only put out three albums, so I'm gonna post a track from each of those. (Beat-heads will likely find some sample friendly material as well)

Pages [1978] - Listen for the Love
Pages - Future Street [1979] - Two People
Pages [1981] - You Need a Hero

!!السلام عليكم

[This is Kuhn transmitting for the first time from his submarine bunker under the churning black waves of the Long Island Sound. It is the first of many transmissions, he hopes.]

Canada means maple syrup, efficient government, Dan Snaith, Nova Scotia rocks, PJ Baisley, and (most recently) DZ and Woogie.

DZ just launched a website for his label @ www.badmanpress.com. Check the downloads page for 20+ free 320's. All bangers. Start with the remix of the Major Lazer track. There's also a promo mix, which I'm dl'ing as I write.

Woogie. 'End Dub' puts the dub in dubstep.

Download his most recent mix: The Dub Knight.

The second track on it is a Martyn remix that chilled Club Love to the core when Martyn rolled in for the Brainfeeder party last month. As that track was rolling on Love's 400,000,000,000 watts, a good-looking girl approached me and spoke into my ear, "Who's DJing?"

I responded by turning to Sam. "This is Martyn, right?"

She could tell I was trying to lose her attention and pulled me back around. "He's really good."

"Right on."

"Right on?" She smirked. "Are you from the South or something?"

"Nah, from the Sixties maybe."

She smiled and got back to dancing.

I thought about a girl in Paris.

Silkie on MAH/linkage

So first, out to A Shaving of the Horn that Speared You, both for its hilarious name and for hosting a TON of the Mary Anne Hobbes guest mixes in separated form. Now I love MAH; I think she's a beautiful, incredibly knowledgable woman with impeccable taste and I would not have been exposed to half of the music I listen to if it weren't for her. That said, to say that she has a penchant for exaggeration is--ironically--an exaggeration. This is a girl who TALKS OUT OF HER ASS, kind of the the female music version of Bill Walton. Instead of claiming that Starbury just made "one of the best passes in the history of Western civilization" or whatever nonsense that guy used to prattle on about on ESPN, MAH will say shit like "I've absolutely never ever heard music as brilliant as this boy's right here," like 3 times a week. Its not a big deal, but it's a little annoying. The folks at ASotHtSY have graciously separated the guest mixes from the rest of the show and hosted them for download on their blog, freeing you from MAH's soothing, sexy, but interminable superlatives, so big ups to them for that.

Of the excellent grip of mixes they host from the likes of Jakes, Martyn, and Dorian Concept, probably my favorite is this one by Londoner Silkie, who sounds to me like a smoother, less aggressive version of Starkey, or alternately, Starkey mixed with Joker. Buttery synths with some crushing wobble taboot. His remix of Skream's "Filth," where he turns that songs trademark grinding, metal-on-metal arpeggio into a kind of atmospheric swag, is a perfect example. Loving this mix right now.

Don't forget to check out A shaving of the Horn that Speared You for more MAH guest mixes. Get it.

Starkey live in Portland 4.11.2009

People absolutely must hear this.

"Portland, this is how we're gonna do it tonight: sweaty and stupid."

Starkey AKA Starkbot AKA the Mayor of Starkville AKA Starkey the Destroyer just released an excellent studio mix CD called Starkbass, and to celebrate said release, he played a set of the most unbelievably good music I've heard in weeks...AND ITS IN 320KBPS! It speaks for itself, so I don't have too much to say about it, but I do want to shout-out Brockolio and the inimitable Bassfaced crew for the link. If you've never been to their blog, you're missing out.

Prefuse 73: "It Happened and It's Still Happening..."

As is true for a lot of people, fewer musicians have had as profound effect on my tastes and standards for music as has Scott Herren. The Piano Overlord and Savath/Savalas stuff is great, but early Prefuse 73 changed my life in ways that I am not even aware of yet . "One Word Extinguisher" could very well be my favorite album ever, "Vocal Studies + Uprock Narratives" is outstanding, and the "92 vs 02 Collection" is, in my mind, one of the best EPs to come out in the 2000's. This music was so smart and new, and I'd say that probably 90% of the artists talked about on this blog would not be the musicians they are without these records.

Simultaneously, excepting Wilco, who is all but dead to me, no other artists has fallen from my personal radar more than P73. Not only has he either been visibly too drunk to perform or simply cancelled 3 shows at which I have paid to see him, but his records haven't done it for me in a while. Now I'm not one of those super-cereal haters who thinks that everything since the 92/02 EP has been garbage. "Preparations," "Surrounded by Silence," and especially "Security Screenings" all have a lot of really cool ideas, but they're all so unfocused and inconsistent that I listen to them a couple times but can never make myself sit down with the whole record. I regret to say that his newest release, "Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian" feels that way to me also. I wish he would just concentrate on developing that weirdly spastic and fragile hip-hop--meets-IDM sound because for my money, no one can do it as well as he can to this day.

To the delight of whiny bitches like me everywhere, this mix has more than a few glimmers of said trailblazing sound, as well as a shitload of other really cool stuff. Mixing heady acid folk, Boredoms, and all kinds of weird and rare stuff that I'm sure he and 5 other people in the world own on acetate with some newer P73 songs, my 2 favorite Madvillainy vocal tracks, and even some WWwWWOOooobbBbBlllllLLee, this is a really great mix for both people who are really down with Scott Herren and for people who might not know a lot about him. AND, he released it as a precursor to a show he's doing at the MOMA tonight, which is insanely dope (provided he decides to come and stays from booze). Big ups Scott; thanks for everything, including this mix.

Robots Don't Sleep

new drop from the homie Robot Koch and Cerebral Vortex! Heavy hitting turbo crunk steez with some more nasty remixes by Flako and Stagg. cop it cop-cop-it.

In other news, Low End Theory Podcast #3 just dropped. I know I've posted all of these so far, but each one is really even better than the last. GLK and Ras G seriously go OFF the deep-end on this one!

BUMP IT IN YA TRUNK.
