Leaving Records

A space for artifacts, tapes, images, and sounds based in Los Angeles. Leaving Records, a genre non-specific outlet for eclectic outsiders from all over the world who catch the ear of L.A. producer MATTHEWDAVID + eye of L.A. visual artist Jesselisa, is a new digital imprint under Plug Research Records.

Transcendental, meditative abstractions floating through space and other dimensions. Be careful... you might lose yourself.

MONO/POLY vs. Ras G vs. Nosaj Thing on Mary Anne Hobbes, 3.3.09

This pretty much sums up everything that I like in electronic music right now. 3 very different styles, 3 very unique individuals, 3 sounds that I absolutely can't get enough of. With MONO/POLY, you get that whole organic, post-Dilla hip-hop sound that so you'll find from a lot of these Brainfeeder guys, and of the Brainfeeder crew, I'd say that MONO/POLY is maybe the least adventurous, but just there's something about how he does it--it sounds more intimate, like instead of experimenting with his music, he's chasing emotions.
Then you have Ras G, maybe the most blunted motherfucker in LA right now, with these humid, sweaty beats right out of a rainforest that he, Madlib, Chong, and Redman have been hotboxing for two hours. I mean, this shit is REAL blunted, but its awesome. Low-key head-nodders with a lot of atmosphere and good sampling. Big ups Ras G.
Photobucket
And THEN you have Nosaj Thing, the Glitch Mob's worst nightmare--a kid who can do something brand new, completely creative, mindblowing, mindbending, trailblazing, next level shit, with glitches, empty space, and weird sounds all over the mix. MAH says this is a live set of his, meaning not a DJ set, meaning he's both mixing this set and performing it on keyboards and samplers live and direct. I am actually at a loss for how to talk about this guy's music, and Nosaj, if you're reading this, I apologize for the Glitch Mob comparison.

Did you know MONO/POLY is 21 and Nosaj Thing is 22? I'm 22 and I haven't done a goddamn thing. Humiliating.

Nuit Blanche mix

A live set i put together a couple weeks ago for an art show at my school...

Artists include... jackhigh, flying lotus, dilla, modeselektor, andre 3000, james pants, royksopp, zachey force funk, kutmah, the cool kids, jackson and his computer band, dabrye, missy elliot, siriusmo, etc...

download it here

............................

also, new Savath and Savalas album coming out soon on Stones Throw... a side project of Guillermo Scott Herren (Prefuse 73, Delarosa and Asora, Piano Overlord), along with Eva Puyuleo Muns and Roberto Carlos Lange, Savath and Savalas might be described as psychedelic electronic folk, with strong brazilian influences and a touch of Herren's signature glitch. An mp3 version of La Llama will be available at Stones Throw on Monday, March 16th, and the hard copy will be released May 19th.

Beautifully strange music. Here's the title track...

Eliot Lipp-Live from the Beatbunker

BEAMRIDER!

From the confines of his fortified lair, E.Lipp strikes again with this mix of remixes, live edits, and straight bangers of the electro-hip-hop persuasion. After you get done looking at the heady colors behind the letters that spell his name, just look at this track list...not a sleeper in sight. If I had to pick a favorite, I'd go with the Jasia 10 track (which can also be found on the "Way Pavers" Old Tacoma comp), but all of this bumps. Cop it, and while you're at it, see the man live on his epic spring tour.

GB Interprets His Contemporaries

A free EP from GB (aka Gifted&Blessed, Gabriel Reyes-Whittaker) with a handful of remixes, including new approaches to Flying Lotus, Exile, Muhsinah and the Beach Boys (yup). Not a bad effort overall... the Little Dragon remix is the standout track for me, though.

Landscape and Breath-7.31.2004

What up Astro Nauts. Mr. McCronnellman here, in Boston by way of St. Louis. Paul has graciously asked me to take part in this excellent little experiment going on here, and I'm honored to do so. I like a lot of the same music as the Don, but I hope to bring a little more liquid drum and bass, downtempo, and dubstep to the blahg. As always, let me/us know what you're feeling and I/we'll do our best to oblige, although keep in mind that we have to keep it kosher with the copyrights. The economy sucks for everyone, including all the wonderful musicians that get the Astro Nautico treatment, so lets rob banks and use the proceeds to buy these fools' records. Without further ado, the first post...

Not necessarily a banger, but I dare you to not enjoy this. David Phipps and Hunter Brown from Sound Tribe Sector 9 have a live, quasi-ambient downtempo electronica project called Landscape and Breath and of the handful of (recorded) shows they performed, this is my favorite. I guess its some kind of benefit for something heady in Northern California somewhere. Lush, smooth, and often improvised, it obviously references Boards of Canada and Tortoise (both of whom had a huge impact on STS9 circa 2004) but I think its a little more approachable. For those STS9 fans in the house, peep the early versions of Be Pulse and Arigato.

Dak "thisone" Cassette Collection '05

found this on dublab.. a raw tape of experimental, jazzy textures and beats from the mysterious 'dak', who i believe was first presented on dublab last year as 'dakim' with two nasty untitled tracks... he has at least four different myspace accounts, each one loaded with consistently dope and fuzzy noises. similar in sound to Ras G..

from dublab:

LEAVING RECORDS is assembling the final pieces for the inaugural release, “standthis”, the debut EP from Los Angeles/Detroit producer dak. To excite the minds of experimental beat enthusiasts worldwide, dak has resurfaced and digitized one of many cassettes from his recording archive. This collection of material is essential in the development of dak’s experimental range. From the opening melodic transpositions and subtly swinging rhythms, to the closing collages of noise and acoustic clutter, LEAVING offers you an introduction to one of Los Angeles’ dopest producers.

Oooops!

I know I haven't posted shit in almost a month, but I want to make it up to you. Haven't had a lot of time to be surfing the internet lately, but I have been working on some other sheet. Wasn't able to host any radio shows last month, but I'll be hosting at least one Astro Nautico, and a jazz show in the coming weeks. Also got a mix I'm working on, probably drop it on friday or saturday, when I have some room to breathe.

In the mean time, here's a video clip from Suite for Ma Dukes, which took place a couple weeks back as a tribute to Dilla, and of course, Ma Dukes, who is now sadly battling the same disease that J did. Put together by Carlos Nino and conducted Miguel-Atwood Ferguson, with a full 40-piece orchestra, and plenty of amazing guest MCs and vocalist appearances (including Talib, Posdnous, Bilal, Dwele and more). Wish I coulda been there, looks like it was pretty unbelievable.. maybe a DVD drop of the concert on the way? fingers are crossed..

and yes, that's Karriem Riggins on the set.

Raise it UP for Ma Dukes!

here's a link to a list of the Timeless concerts... I think they already did one with David Axelrod, which I'm sure was mind blowing, and there's one with Arthur Verocai coming up soon, also with a full orchestra! Insane!

p.s. for my Montreal peeps, I'm going to be DJing a short set from 2-3am at Nuit Blanche McGill on thursday, all the way up on University Street if you want to stop by... I'll be selling some homemade compilation CDs before that, too.. Samiyam steez.

more posts to follow... stay tuned.

Ichiro

is a badass mofo. when i listen to ichiro, i feel like i'm falling down a flight of stairs, but as i'm falling, all kinds of vines and flowers reach out from the walls to grab me and ease my descent. exploring the moon with roller blades on, i trip and fall into a purple lake filled with clownfish and typewriters. surfing an avalanche of molasses, i discovered ichiro randomly sometime in the beginning (middle?) of last year, and he has been gracious enough to continously update me with beats he's been working on. he hails from Japan, cuts through jazz like a hot knife through butter, and humbly declined to be interviewed. a mysterious figure, but one of the most exciting artists i have encountered. here are some of the tracks he sent me...
