Edan's Radio Show

Edan, the humble magnificent, is one of my favorite rappers, producers, and DJs, (and probably my favorite who does all three) but I'd be lying if I said I've thought much about him recently. That's because he allegedly moved to London and has been laying relatively low as far as musical output and performances. However, I got this exciting bulletin upon logging into myspace today:

SUP Y'ALL...
I'VE STARTED UP MY OWN RADIO SHOW.
IN THE AGE OF TECHNOLOGY WE CAN DO THESE THINGS NOW.
I'VE RECORDED THE FIRST INSTALLMENT. IT WAS MORE LIKE A LOOSE TEST RUN TO SEE HOW SH*T FELT AND I WAS COOL WITH IT, SO I DECIDED TO PUT IT OUT THERE.

FOR NOW, I'LL BE DOING THE SHOW WHEN I FEEL LIKE IT.
ONCE MY WEBSITE GETS RE-VAMPED (SHOULD BE AROUND AUGUST/SEPTEMBER), I'LL BE DOING A NEW SHOW EVERY WEEK AND POSTING IT EXCLUSIVELY ON THE SITE.

HOPEFULLY, THE SHOW WILL IMPROVE AS TIME GOES ON...WITH DROPS, GUEST HOSTS...THE WHOLE NINE.

SO CHECK OUT THIS FIRST INSTALLMENT...
TWO HOURS OF HI-BROW // LO-FI ENTERTAINMENT!

HERE'S THE LINK:

Edan radio show #1

GET BACK TO ME AND LET ME KNOW IF Y'ALL LIKED IT OR WHATEVER...

AS ALWAYS, THANKS FOR READING//LISTENING.

Happy 4/20 y'all

That COLORADO sound #3 (kind of): Alex B's Mr. Nice Guy mix

This section was intended to highlight a particular style of music coming out of Colorado (a little sound I like to call "that COLORADO sound"), a style to which Alex Botwin has been instrumental (no pun intended) over the last few years. Be it with his band the Pnuma Trio, with his production outfit Alex B, or his Pnuma PA synthesis of the two, this is a guy who makes blunted, live-instrument leaning/ready/featuring music, blending big time Dilla influences with mountain air, skiing, and really good weed to just generally make heads nod.

On his newest mix, a podcast of mainly unreleased tracks that will come out on his debut full length later this year for Tokyo label Made in Glitch, Alex B slowly backs away from that COLORADO sound, putting away his MPC and ski hat and instead sharing some just-plain-dope hip-hop beats that could be coming from any corner of the world right now. Spacy, post-Dilla sounds that move and occasionally even drop pretty hard, this kind of reminds me of Flying Lotus, with more glitch and less soul. Very appropriate music to be listening to on today, this headiest of holidays. Have fun with it.

54 Perspectives

Another monster mash from the main man Joe Kay. Loads of new shit, all of it dope. Definitely gonna be bumping this on 4/20!

in his own words..

This past month... I gained a huge amount of sounds from all types of artists from all over the world. I threw everything into one big playlist and then narrowed the list down to what I felt was right. I ended up with 54 Perspectives. Furthermore, I came across a really talented artist from France who goes by the name of 96. After seeing his series of art, I had to connect the show to him; in result we came up with collabo. Make sure you Peep his ARTWORK. Once again, thank you to everyone who has been following & BIG ups to all the music artists who contributed as well, you know who you are!!!! Quality will always get played here. This might be really different for you, but trust, come in with open ears, and hear what I hear.
stay up.
Massive Respect.

Reso-Live at Fuzz 4/09

To me, one of the coolest parts of the whole dubstep thing is the degree of subtlety a lot of these producers are working into their mixes. For a lot of tunes, you need to listen 3 or 4 times to appreciate all the layers in the mix, and it can be really rewarding when you find some hidden sample or random sound.

The other cool thing is that, within the same genre, people like Reso are making the most brutally fierce, crushing music, demanding your headphones to be encased in a helmet of some kind. I mean, jesus, this mix is FIERCE. Techy dubstep with moar wobble than a broken one of those sketchy hotel beds that you put a quarter in, gigantic drops, and some HEADY samples (the first track, which is an unreleased demo, samples the noise that Transformers make when they transform), Reso fills out this mix of his own material (a lot of it unreleased) with venerable tracks from Caspa, Rusko, Starkey, and Benny Page and some evil drum'n'bass for those brave enough to stick around 'til the end. Big mix, cop it. Boh.

And btw, this isn't the flier from this gig, but I would've been remiss if I didn't broadcast this fucking awesome image as often as possible.

2009.04.05 Kode9 and Flying Lotus at FWD>>

If you read my posts, you know I like to jabber about what I've posted. I guess that's kind of the entire point of music blogging...

Well fuck that. This mix needs no introduction...two of the smartest, most relevant musicians in the world right now made a mix together at Plastic People last weekend. Listen to it or lose at life. That's all I have to say about that.

Except to add that if you're in New England, get ready for next week: Kode 9 at Bassic on Wednesday the 15th, then the Astro Nautico crew heads to NYC for Brainfeeder @ Love with Kode 9, Flying Lotus, Martyn, Mike Slott, Ras_G, and Pursuit Grooves (its $8 taboot) on Thursday the 16th, then back to Love for Dub War NYC the 17th with Ras_G, Finnish producers Clouds, DJG (meh), and newjack Falty DL. Holler atcha boys if you see us.

The Lost Generation

Just came across this gem the other day at Milk Crate Breaks. Lush, classic soul from 1970. Here are two choice cuts from the album...

The Lost Generation - Wait a Minute
The Lost Generation - Someday

from allmusic.com...

Heavenly harmonies on vinyl, Chicago's Lost Generation consists of two sets of brothers: Lowrell and Fred Simon, and Jessie and Leslie Dean. They never went platinum or gold but their biggest record Sly, Slick & the Wicked influenced hundreds of groups; a Cleveland, a Californian, and an East Coast group have all named themselves Sly, Slick & Wicked. Ironically, though it was intended as a warning to women, the song appeals more to men. Brunswick wasted the bouncy "You're So Young but You're So True," on the back of "Talking the Teenage Language" (not included). A silky smooth "Wait a Minute," with its hesitating beat, went to #25 in the R&B chart. They do enjoyable renditions of Chairmen of the Boards' "Give Me Just a Little More Time," the Moments' "Love on a Two Way Street," and the Delfonics' "Didn't I Blow Your Mind."

NORMREX PRESENTS : THEOPHILUS LONDON & MACHINEDRUM

Copied from a myspace bulletin:

THEOPHILUS LONDON - THIS CHARMING MAN

- EXECUTIVE PRODUCED BY IEMERGE (2xDMC WORLD CHAMP)
- FEATURING NORMREX PRODUCERS MACHINEDRUM, JIMMY EDGAR & LETHERETTE
- GUEST APPEARANCES BY NINJASONIK, JESSE BOYKINS III, PETER HADAR & COCO SARII,

Theophilus London's "This Charming Man" is a genre bending journey which takes the listener intro many new sonic territories. The foremost theme of 'exploration & discovery' reveals itself from track to track, returning all the way to the albums conception when Theophilus first began working with Normrex producers in 2007. "This Charming Man' is a definitive statement that Theophilus was bornwith a compulsion to question conformity & there in lies his truest beauty & strength.

MACHINEDRUM - LATE NIGHT OPERATION (FEATURING THEOPHILUS LONDON)

WITH REMIXES BY JIMMY EDGAR, HUDSON MOHAWKE, LETHERETTE, NEONBLACK & BODY LANGUAGE

Skream Mishka Mix Vol. 6

Watch out for that WwwWWWwoOooOBBbBBBBBllLLLlLEEEE...

This is kind of an older mix--I think it came out in the beginning of March--but it got lost on my computer and I just resurrected it the other day to discover that it is, in fact, the business. For a while there, it kind of seemed like Skream fell off. Not like he lost his steez or anything, but he wasn't the name-on-everyone's-mouth that he had been after, say, his Essential Mix aired.

This is probably the best Skream mix I've heard since then. Srzly. Of course the favorites--"Simple City," "Filth"--will wobble your head off, but these newer tracks, most of which he's been playing on his Stella Sessions show since the beginning of 2009, are just...well...I don't know what to say about them. "What Did He Say" is one of the biggest tunes I have ever heard, the Silkie remix of "Filth" is just wild, and if you haven't heard Skream's remix of La Roux's "In for the Kill," you are failing to maximize your potential in this world. Its tunes and mixes like these that confirm why this kid is so important to dubstep and electronic music, and make me want to stand in front of a soundsystem for the rest of my life.
