This section was intended to highlight a particular style of music coming out of Colorado (a little sound I like to call "that COLORADO sound"), a style to which Alex Botwin has been instrumental (no pun intended) over the last few years. Be it with his band the Pnuma Trio, with his production outfit Alex B, or his Pnuma PA synthesis of the two, this is a guy who makes blunted, live-instrument leaning/ready/featuring music, blending big time Dilla influences with mountain air, skiing, and really good weed to just generally make heads nod.
On his newest mix, a podcast of mainly unreleased tracks that will come out on his debut full length later this year for Tokyo label Made in Glitch, Alex B slowly backs away from that COLORADO sound, putting away his MPC and ski hat and instead sharing some just-plain-dope hip-hop beats that could be coming from any corner of the world right now. Spacy, post-Dilla sounds that move and occasionally even drop pretty hard, this kind of reminds me of Flying Lotus, with more glitch and less soul. Very appropriate music to be listening to on today, this headiest of holidays. Have fun with it.
